Blow-up sex dolls, a seductive Nun, a fake beheading and monk that turns
out to be a promiscuous Duke. Measure for Measure is certainly
a ‘problem play’. You can’t help laughing when the curtain falls down, but only
because the ending is clearly not the normal happy-ever-after.

Elizabeth is Missing
*****
Meet Maud. Maud spends her days pottering around the now
deserted family home, nipping to the corner shop to restock on tinned peaches
and polos.

The Sealed Letter

Amazingly, and for the first time since I dived into the word of an English undergraduate, I am running low on unread books. This is brilliant news as it gives
me an excuse to expand my ever-growing library and head out to the nearest
bookshop. But it did mean that in collating my holiday reading list, I had to
delve into my mum’s bookshelf.

Book Haul June 2015
So I’m a bit late with this one due to technical reasons. My laptop has decided that it has had enough of me after three years, so my blog post have been a tad delayed. 18 days later than planned, here are the books I will be reading/have been reading this month.

The Children Act

When I pick up a book I expect two things from it: entertainment and knowledge.
Why do we read? It’s always for one of these two reasons, whether it be a ‘trashy’ romance to amuse us on the beach, a thriller to keep us company in the dark hours of insomnia, or a desperate attempt to improve our dinner party talk by trawling through the latest ‘it’ book. Regardless of the reasons I pick up a book, if it doesn’t teach and amuse I tire of it pretty quickly.

Before I Go To Sleep

After the more serious H
is for Hawk, I fancied a riveting read. The kind of book that hooks its
readers by the teeth, pulls us through the narrative, twisting in one direction
before yanking back, leaving us exhilarated, disorientated and gasping for air.

H is for Hawk

Soaring through the sky, basking with the sun upon her feathered back, Mabel surveys the city of Cambridge. The spires of King’s College Chapel rise to the grey sky above, broken only by the preying goshawk.

Far From the Madding Crowd
* * * * *
Far away from the madding crowd, I have retreated to the bluebell woods, in true Thomas Hardy style, to indulge in some literature.

The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly

The sun may have been blown away today but it made it out for the bank holiday weekend and what better way to enjoy the rarity than to spend a little time reading in the garden. Our cherry blossom is looking particularly spectacular this week and I couldn't rest a cheeky sunbathe beneath its blushing boughs.

Book Haul - May 2015
With the dissertation finished I have finally made the
long-awaited trip to the bookshop and splashed out on some great reads for the
bank holiday weekend. It has been a while since I allowed myself in Waterstones, as I tend to spend all day there, but with deadlines a thing of the
past, I cannot wait to get my teeth into these beauties.

A Room with a View

After hours of toil, thousands of words, countless library books and quite a lot of motivating chocolate, the dissertation is in.

Alone on the Wide Wide Sea of dissertation-ing.
This term has been hectic and wonderful and the last week
even more so as I’ve frantically taken out every book I could carry from the
University library. If anyone is looking for criticism on the importance of
English Country Dancing in Jane Austen, I have a wide selection.
